2022 Barbera d’Asti, La Tota 14.5% alc. (£20 guide price)

As always, this is a glorious Barbera, packed with blackberry and blueberry notes and brimming with dynamism and directness.  Luxurious, layered, long and lingering, this is a beautiful wine with an incredible persistence of fruit and hints of liquorice spice and faint mintiness, which brings thrilling detail to the smooth black limo of gorgeous fruit.  18/20 (Drink now – 2027)

2021 Barbera d’Asti Superiore, Alfiera 15% alc. (£30 guide price)

Given the glories of my perennial favourite, La Tota, it is hard to imagine how the Marchesi Alfieri Barbera template can be augmented.  And then along comes Alfiera, the ‘Super Superiore’.  With an extra year under its belt, a hint more alcohol, finely hewn oak augmentation and perfume with the volume turned up to 11, this is a spectacular creation, and it takes the Barbera grape and lifts it to regal status.  18.5/20 (Drink now – 2032)

2020 CostaQuaglia, Terre Alfieri Nebbiolo 14% alc. (£30 guide price)

Swopping varieties from Marchesi Alfieri’s ace, Barbera, to the more well-known Piemontese standard bearer Nebbiolo might prove challenging, but this is not the case with the thrilling 2020 release.  Like many 2020s, this is a pliable, velvety, juicy wine with uncommon allure and depth of ripeness, which shows that this often-hard-edged grape can have a more genial side.  This outstanding wine has kicked off its drinking window much earlier than expected, yet there is more than enough acidity and discreet tannin here to power it for a decade.  CostaQuaglia shows exceptionally classy winemaking, as one would expect from one of the truly elite Piemonte producers. 18/20 (Drink now – 2030)
