Matthew Jukes - 100 Best Australian Wines - 23-24

The 100 Best Australian Wines 2023/24 Festival Season is upon us.  I have organised four incredibly exciting new Festivals around the UK to showcase the finest Australian wines of the year.  2024 is the 20th year since I started my 100 Best Australian Wines initiative, and to mark this moment, I have upgraded my old roadshow format into a series of sensational, much larger celebrations.  Food, music, wine, art, Saturday and Sunday afternoons have never been so good – the 100 Best Australian Wine Festivals are epic celebrations of the greatest Australian wines.   Here are the events with full details and links to ticket sales.

Thank you to all of the volunteers, to Diana, her husband Milo and daughter Polly, who with Ewan, expertly piped the guests into the tasting (pictured above).  Thanks also to representatives from Hatch, HN Wines, Fells and ABS Wine Agencies who gave up their Saturdays to pour their wines and bring valuable expertise to proceedings!

100 Best Heron March 2024

On Monday, I gathered together 26 elite Scottish on-trade heroes (sommeliers, F&B Directors, chefs, wine buyers & wine tasters). I opened 84 spectacular wines from my 100 Best Australian Wines Report 2023/24 for them to taste. The venue was the epic Heron – one of the most beautiful restaurants in the country. Manager Seoridh Fraser and chef/patron Sam Yorke (and his chef partner and mum) made this event one of the most professional, atmospheric and delicious occasions of my wine life. After the tasting, we all sat down for a stunning Michelin-starred dinner, where we looked deeper into the wines with no spittoons to distract us. As I understand it, this was a gathering like no other with wine experts from The Glenturret, WoodWinters, Smith & Gertrude, eòrna, The Witchery, Killiecrankie House, The Palmerston, Lyla, Aizle, Number One Balmoral, Bar Brett, Fhior, Martin Wishart, Ka Pao, Ox & Finch, The Kitchin, Black Grape Wine Bar, Wedgwood The Restaurant and Port of Leith Distillery in attendance. I know that Aussie wines are adored in Scotland, and on the 20th anniversary of 100 Best, I felt I had to make this the most memorable event imaginable! If you happen to be in the vicinity, I urge you to visit Heron. Be sure to drink Australian and raise a glass to them, retaining their Michelin Star!

…The Grand Ballroom was at capacity!

And that was not all because I hosted a fine wine dinner for 44 lucky people that evening with older vintages of 100 Best classics.  This was the largest ever 100 Best Australian Wines event by some margin in Birmingham and I could not have done it without the immense help from the Loki team, the amazing staff at The Grand Hotel and the wine trade representatives, from Moorooduc Estate, Penfolds, ABS Wine Agencies, Liberty Wines, HN Wines, New Generation, Enotria&Coe, Goedhuis Waddesdon, Hill Smith Family Estates, Fells, Hatch Mansfield, Mount Langi Ghiran, Xanadu Estate and Yering Station, who came along on the day to offer their expertise while pouring their stunning wines.

Join hosts Carruthers & Kent in the Grand Hall of the beautiful Wylam Brewery for the final leg of Matthew Jukes’ 100 Best Australian Wines Festival season.  This is the first time that Matthew has brought his 100 Best to Newcastle, and it seems fitting that in the 20th year of this initiative he joins forces with one of the most dynamic and highly-respected independent wine merchants in the country.  Mo, Claire and Matthew look forward to welcoming the fine folk of Newcastle with open arms and sensational wines.  This is a landmark event and one that will live long in the memory and the taste buds!
