Episode 18 – La Fleur-Pétrus
2020 Château La Fleur-Pétrus, Pomerol
93% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot
16-18 months in 50% new oak
There is a full chorus and orchestra crammed into this beautiful wine given the complexity of its perfume and the depth of its prodigious flavour. With a cool edge to the finish, which nicely balances the fabulously lush fruit, there is a swirling vortex of red and black fruit here and it manages to trigger every taste bud within its grasp. The oak is perfectly weighted and the tannins are noble and controlled and so it is clear that this is one of the most notable Pomerols that I have tasted in this vintage. 18.5+/20
Scores – I have attached my scores out of 20 for each wine. If a score has no ‘+’, this indicates a wine that is in balance and can be drunk relatively young thanks to its precocity and charm. One ‘+’ indicates a wine that will benefit from medium-term ageing (in accordance with the style of the wine), while two ‘++’ indicates a wine that should manage to make the long haul, softening and evolving as it goes.
