2020 Bordeaux En Primeur Report

Episode 15 – Calon Ségur & Family

2020 Château Calon Ségur, 3ème Cru Saint-Estèphe

This is a completely single-minded Calon with the most amazingly determined cassis flavour I can remember on both the nose and palate.  The oak is extraordinary – so discreet and yet so critical to this wine’s complex array of deeply satisfying nuances.  This is an all-encompassing performance from Calon and it grows in the glass exponentially with the nose filling the room with the most exquisite Cabernet perfume.   The palate lengthens at the same time and as it does so it then widens and courses across every taste bud filling them with astounding flavours.  This is a truly monumental creation and the tannins are as majestic as I have seen in 2020.  While this is a sensationally grand wine it is not in any way showy or posturing and this makes it even more enviable and worthy of respect.  This is not a blockbuster but a medium-weight wine drenched in the most extraordinary concentration of fruit.  I tasted it six times over two days and it maintained its astounding determination throughout these rigorous assessments.  This is, without a doubt, one of the wines of the vintage.  19+/20

2020 Le Marquis de Calon Ségur, Saint-Estèphe (2nd wine of Calon Ségur)

This is a lush and expansive Marquis in 2020 with prickly acidity and grippy tannins punctuating every move it makes.  While the palate emphasises its youthfulness the nose reveals amazing detail and layer upon layer of red and black fruit.  You will have to be patient for this wine to soften because the tannins are certainly powerful but this is a genuine slice of Calon Ségur passion and excellence and I am certain that it will blossom beautifully in a decade or so.  17.5+/20

2020 Château Capbern, Saint-Estèphe (from the Calon Ségur portfolio)

This is a fantastic Capbern with singular purity and precision.  The message is not a complex one but it is focussed, clean as a whistle and penetrative with ripe, but cool cassis tones and perfectly balanced oak.  This is one of the great value wines of Bordeaux and in 2020 it embraces the vintage characteristics, the Saint-Estèphe terroir and also its Calon Ségur parentage perfectly. 17+/20

Scores – I have attached my scores out of 20 for each wine.  If a score has no ‘+’, this indicates a wine that is in balance and can be drunk relatively young thanks to its precocity and charm. One ‘+’ indicates a wine that will benefit from medium-term ageing (in accordance with the style of the wine), while two ‘++’ indicates a wine that should manage to make the long haul, softening and evolving as it goes.
