Wednesday Wines – Episode 36

Episode 36 – 2nd December 2020

Five wines reduced to a tenner at Waitrose from today!

From today until 15th December, Waitrose launches its annual ‘Ten at £10’ bonanza and this year there are more worthy wines than ever for you to consider loading up with.  As this year’s event kicks off on a Wednesday I have dedicated this Wednesday Wines column to the best five wines, across five different styles.  Do not delay as these wines always more very fast indeed!

Sparkling

2020 Bird in Hand, Sparkling Pinot Noir, Adelaide Hills, South Australia (£15.99, reduced to £10.00, Waitrose).

Always a winner, this wine has appeared in my 100 Best Australian Wines Report in previous vintages and it is highly perfumed, super-smooth sparkler with a neat finish.

White

2019 Pouilly-Fumé, Hauts de Perrière, Loire, France (£16.79, reduced to £10.00, Waitrose).

Not a particularly persistent P-F but at a tenner, this is a very well-made Loire Sauvignon Blanc and it has an immediate air and this makes it a perfect wine for aperitif duties this Christmas.

Rosé

2019 Mirabeau, Pure Rosé, Côtes de Provence, France (£14.99, reduced to £10.00, Waitrose).

An absolute star, this is a thriller at £10 and it is on top form in 2019.  Look no further for inexpensive rosé this season.

Red

2018 Luigi Bosca, Selección de Vistalba Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina (£16.99, reduced to £10.00, Waitrose).

Big, rich, brooding and powerful, there is a lot of wine here for a tenner, but you ought to decant it because the tannins are fairly hairy until they have had half an hour to calm down.  Thereafter this is carefully oaked Malbec with a dark, black fruit core.

Fortified

NV Kopke, Reserve Tawny Port, Douro, Portugal (£14.99, reduced to £10.00, Waitrose).

Not too big, rich or yeasty, this is a rather discreet Tawny, and it is clean, nutty and balanced.  If you like a brief flirtation with Port each year as opposed to getting knee-deep in the subject then this is a winner.
