Vega-Sicilia New Vintage Launch 3rd December 2018

Vega-Sicilia New Vintage Launch 3rd December 2018

2014 Pintia, Tempos Vega-Sicilia, Toro, Spain

Cake spice leads the aromatic onslaught, with bold, almost ruby porty notes on the nose and nice initial control and weight on the palate. Fresh and balanced with superb glossiness throughout this seems a little forward for the first time in history and I like it! 18/20 £186ib per 6 bottles

2015 Alion, Tempos Vega Sicilia, Ribera del Duero, Spain

Soft and squelchy liquorice and blackberry fruit seeps into the palate and there is lovely buoyant fruit here matched to a round, succulent finish. This is a bright Alion with bold, ripe notes from the start and the oak is perfectly matched to the fruit. 18/20 £276ib per 6 bottles

2015 Macán, Clásico, Rioja, Spain

I am still struggling to like these wines and this Clásico is a little one dimensional and short with rather a lean feel which makes me think it is in need of more love and a lot more stuffing. 16.5/20 £144ib per 6 bottles

2014 Mácan, Rioja, Spain

Oaky and hard, there is no more ripeness or breadth of flavour here than its stablemate shows which seems odd. In need of more fruit intensity to back up the structural elements, this might find harmony one day but I wouldn’t bet on it. 16.5+/20 £243ib per 6 bottles

2014 Vega-Sicilia Valbuena No. 5, Ribera del Duero

There are more herbaceous notes than expected here and not quite the power and richness that I am looking for. Admittedly this is a spicy and ethereal Valbuena and what it lacks in richness it makes up for in old-style complexity and length, but I would love it to show a little more depth in the mid-palate. 18+/20 £252ib per 3 bottles

2009 Vega-Sicilia Unico, Ribera del Duero, Spain

There is tremendous depth and richness of flavour coupled with amazing nobility here and this wine soars above the other releases this year and it looks sublime. Again, rather flattering and pliant, there is incredible grandeur here and the oak, tannin, spice and intensity are all in perfect harmony. 19+/20 £630ib per 3 bottles

2019 Vega-Sicilia Unico Reserva Especial, Ribera del Duero, Spain

Made from a blend of 2006, 2007 and 2009 this is the first RE that I can see is remotely in balance and it is a beast but one which seems harmonious and integrated. Dark, swarthy and brooding, this is a fascinating and briary wine. 18++/20 £798ib per 3 bottles

Plus – from the Vega-Sicilia portfolio, 2008 Oremus 5 Puttonyos Aszu

Amazing and really flamboyant this is a sensational wine with great length and swagger and while it is drinking perfectly I wouldn’t doubt that it could go for another fifty years as if it were a day. 19/20 approx. £55, 50cl bottle
