5 Incredible wines for matching to the Indian recipes this week including Oatley Shiraz, Elizabeth Semillon & Toro Loco

Daily Mail | September 15, 2012

One of my favourite styles of food – I have been matching wine to Indian food for over a decade!

2005 McWilliams, Mount Pleasant, Elizabeth Semillon, Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Australia (£11.49, reduced to £9.99, until 17 September, Wine Rack & www.winerack.co.uk). You will have to get in quick to take advantage of this stunning offer, so do hurry.  Elizabeth is a legendary wine and this 2005 vintage is at its peak.  With layers of lemon balm fruit and a cool, long, fascinating finish this is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

2011 Château de Montguéret, Saumur Blanc, Loire, France (£7.99 Marks & Spencer).  Made from twenty year old chenin blanc vines and loaded with crunchy apple, waxy honey and fresh ginger notes this is a effortlessly classy wine.  With a haunting flavour and silky texture you would find this beauty a magical partner to the sumptuous Keralan coconut curry recipe.

2010 Mâcon-Uchizy, Domaine Talmard, Burgundy, France (£10.75, Wrightson Wines tel. 01748 832 666 & www.wrightsonwines.co.uk).  I don’t expect that anyone would have guessed that I would match this delicate, heavenly white Burgundy with the Bombay potatoes recipe – but it is a heroic combo.  Talmard is a top estate in Mâcon and for a sniff over a tenner you can drink awesome, crystalline chardonnay from its spiritual home.

2010 Robert Oatley, Shiraz, McLaren Vale, South Australia (£13.00, Oddbins).  With a whiff of posh French oak, macerated blackberries and plums on the nose, this is a very opulent and showy shiraz made by one of Australia’s most talented winemakers, Larry Cherubino.  If you love lusty, bombastic, mouth-coating wines with class and breeding this is a winner and Bob’s signature is on the label to prove it.

2011 Toro Loco, Tempranillo, Utiel Requena, Spain (£3.49, Aldi). It’s back!  Last time I wrote this wine up it sold in seconds.  The new vintage of ‘Crazy Bull’ is delicious, with jolly red fruit and a delicious lick of spice.  Drink it slightly chilled with the Aubergines with sweet spiced yoghurt and pomegranate recipe –you will be amazed.
