2010 Vuurberg White, Stellenbosch, South Africa (£18.50, reduced to £15.00 for MoneyWeek readers only, SWIG tel. 08000 272272 & ww.swig.co.uk). The eagle-eyed Damon Quinlan, at SWIG, spotted a massive review that I wrote about the South African wine scene for the launch of a brand new wine mag in the Cape. Being somewhat of a South African wine specialist he noted down a few wines. He then sent me an email saying (cheekily, as is his wont) that we have remarkably similar palates and would I be interested in informing my MoneyWeek wine aficionados that one of my rave wines was about to arrive in the UK any minute now? Only 600 bottles of Vuurberg have just landed (make that 576, because I want some) and here is a snippet from my note – ‘… a wine that indulges my own fertile fantasies. This shockingly brazen Chenin Blanc, Viognier, Semillon, Grenache Blanc and Roussanne blend is incredible. Everything suggests that this baroque wine would be simply too much to handle, but it shows terrific class and dashing, daring fruit throughout its minute-long assault on your senses. With total confidence and unrivalled élan this is my cult (South African) white wine discovery of the year.’ Yours for fifteen quid only!
