This week’s Deli Dinners have inspired me to find some romantic, artisan-style, delicious wines to match with the recipes.
2009 Torres, Sangre de Toro, Penedès, Spain (£7.03, Asda; £7.25, Morrisons; £7.55, Waitrose; £7.49, Majestic). Made from the evocative quartet of garnacha, syrah, cinsault and cariñena this spicy, medium-weight, blackberry-scented wine is a joy to behold. I can heartily recommend large glasses with the steak and salted porcini butter recipe. This is a perfectly swarthy and yet comforting combo.
2010 Wither Hills Chardonnay, Marlborough, New Zealand (£7.99, reduced to £5.99 if you buys 2 bottles, until 29 August, Majestic). I cannot quite believe this deal and I also cannot encourage you enough to take advantage of it. WH chardonnay is fifteen pounds worth of sultry, elegant, top flight, Burgundy-inspired flavour and you should buy as much as you can to last for the next few years!
2010 Tresolmos Verdejo, Rueda, Spain (£7.95, Wine Society tel. 01438 741177). I opened this wine for my parents the other day and we were all amazed at the class and refinement in this perky verdejo. If you are a fan of sauvignon blanc, but want a change of scenery, then Rueda is the place to be. Bursting with light, vibrant, grassy, citrus fruit Tresolmos is a star and it is perfect with the Moroccan couscous cakes.
2009 Miopasso, Nero d’Avola, Sicily, Italy (£8.99 Planet of the Grapes tel. 020 7405 4912, SH Jones tel. 01295 251 177; £7.99, Hawkshead Wines tel. 01604 497928; £8.20, Trina’s Wines tel. 020 8876 3576). Made using the Ripasso method, which uses a small percentage of dried grapes to add extra concentration to the finished wine, Miopasso is a wondrous red fruit-cocktail-scented wine with lashings of coffee bean and liquorice notes. It is a fabulous alternative to more run of the mill syrahs and cabernets which lack the cheekiness and exoticism of this wine.
2009 Taste the Difference, Toscano Rosso, Italy (5.99, Sainsbury’s). Nicely packaged and bargain-priced, this brand new Tuscan red will be a sure-fire hit with my Weekend followers. It is a pocket rocket of flavour with crisp cranberry fruit and a refreshing lick of acidity of this finish. Top notch and jolly, this is a terrific new wine.
