Father’s Day
Here are five brilliant wines for the perfect Father’s Day presents. I have made sure that I have catered for all tastes!
2005 Asda Extra Special Chianti Classico Riserva, Tuscany, Italy (£7.98, Asda). Five years old and in peak condition, this is an incredible wine for the price and it is perfect with Sunday roasts. With blackberry fruit and masses of spice this is a very grand slice of Tuscany indeed.
2007 Jim Barry, The Lodge Hill Shiraz, Clare Valley, South Australia (£9.99, reduced to £7.99 if you buy two any two Australian wines until 30 August, Majestic). Big, bold and rich, this lusty shiraz is a macho wine with character and presence. Drink it with steak and other carnivorous fare for a magnificent result.
2009 Paxton Shiraz Rosé, McLaren Vale, South Australia (£9.95, www.dorjes.co.uk; £9.99, Cooden Cellars tel. 01323 649 663; £11.00, Villeneuve Wines tel. 0131 558 8441). The most manly rosé of the moment comes from this ultra-organic operation in McLaren Vale – it is cherry and mulberry-scented and bone dry. Perfect with Indian dishes and even burgers.
2007 Prominent Hill, Single Vineyard Shiraz, Adelaide Hills, South Australia (£12.99, Waitrose). Classy, smooth, elegant and thought-provoking, this is not a blockbuster but a more considered Aussie shiraz with a more European feel with elegant spice and black fruit notes.
2004 Taste the Difference Vintage Champagne, France (£19.99, Sainsbury’s). The best value Champagne on the shelves right now is this cracking vintage wine from Sainsbury’s. Layered, distinguished and tasting like it costs £20 more, this is a brilliant and rewarding wine.
